This Holiday’s Five Can’t Miss Boutiques in West Michigan

I’ve been a Realtor in West Michigan for 14 years and continue to develop a deep love for West Michigan’s growing local hot spots. Not only do we have a vibrant brewery and music scene, but it is home to a wide variety of high-quality and unique boutiques, many locally-owned.

This holiday season, I wanted to share my list of five can’t-miss clothing retailers to visit this December while searching for that perfect holiday gift.

#1. Boutique Emmanuel – Located inside the lobby of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids, Boutique Emmanuel has been carrying trendy dresses, pants, skirts and more for over 25 years. Shoppers can choose from name brands like Comfy USA and Clara Sunwoo, and the store specializes in cozy sweaters, jackets and cardigans, perfect for the winter months in Michigan. Plus, the selection of necklaces, earrings, hats and purses can accessorize any outfit.

Boutique Emmanuel’s Facebook page posts plenty of photo galleries so you can get a glimpse into the store before you go, and if you can’t make it in person, customers can always shop online.

Address: 187 Monroe Ave NW, Grand Rapids

#2. Down to Earth – In the heart of Grand Haven’s commercial district along Washington Ave, Down to Earth features a unique blend of vintage-inspired clothing, accessories and decor for the home and garden. Along with classic contemporary skirts, sweaters, coats and scarves, the local retailer offers painted weathered signs, pillows, bottles, vases and artwork that would be great either as a gift or for the cottage.

Down to Earth also stays involved with the lakeshore community, hosting fashion shows and benefits at venues like Old Boys Brewhouse in nearby Spring Lake.

#3. Jade Clothing – Part of downtown Rockford’s charm and attraction comes from shops like Jade Clothing, a contemporary women’s fashion retailer that supplies jewelry, handbags, shoes and gift items in a 100 year-old building adjacent to the Rogue River.

Named “Best Clothing Store” by On-The-Town Magazine in 2011 and the “Top Women Owned Business” in 2013 by the Grand Rapids Business Journal, Jade not only has a custom denim bar, but can also host private shopping parties in the space that boasts vaulted wood ceilings and a terrace overlooking the river.

Address: 17 Squires St., Rockford

#4. jb and me – The designer fashion store started by a mother and daughter team recently added a Grand Rapids location at Breton Village Mall to go with its initial concept in Holland. Women’s clothing is the main focus, but jb and me also specializes in vintage finds, home goods and accessories.

Stylists are also on hand to give expert fashion advice as they help each individual customer pick the best from brands like Free People, Michael Stars and Citizens of Humanity. An added bonus: jb and me is just steps away from Anthropologie, Evereve, Lululemon and more.

Address: 1964 Breton Rd, GR & 36 West 8th Street, Holland

#5. 1 Happy Girl – Saugatuck is well-known for its boutique shops including this one, started by model and shopping fanatic Paige Schwartz. Originally founded as an online store, 1 Happy Girl now has three locations and this on on the Blue Star Highway is the first outside of Chicagoland.

Shoppers can try on a plethora of plaid shirts, hoodies, dresses, sweaters and blouses from name brand and trendy clothing makers. Reasonably priced jewelry and necklaces are a main focus here and available accessories range from beaded clutches to scarves and beanies.

Address: 3291 Bluestar Hwy, Saugatuck
